Demand A Sacrifice

It was a gray and damp afternoon.

My wife and I were walking thru the alleys of an unknown street.

I was upset. She had acquired a compromise to be at a weeding party.
I didn't want to show up with her at this particular event 'cause I had the feeling that the bride was one of her best friends and also that I had had a closer relationship with the bride before I met my wife.

I was thinking how to skip this compromise, when we arrived at what appeared to be an abandoned warehouse. There were a dozen guys around what appeared to be a ticket office.

Suddenly it came to my mind that this abandoned warehouse was an underground venue in which Nirvana was about to play later.

My wife walked to the ticket office and asked for a couple of tickets for us.
Dunno why, but it seemed that the very same day of the show tickets were still available.

Everything was going so well, but the ticket seller asked to my wife for some sort of password. She didn't know it. I got mad.

Dunno why, but she was the only one who could buy a couple of tickets for us.

http://www.thesenseofdoubt.com/
I was about to collapse. I was so furious.
I had always wanted so bad to be in a Nirvana show.

Somehow she got the tickets, but in different sections of the venue.
We walked into the venue and we took different paths.

The venue seemed to be a bull arena, except that the floor was made of concrete.
At times, the venue seemed a circus.

My wife was so close to the stage and I was almost in the last row of the last section of the venue. I couldn't believe it. She didn't even like Nirvana as I did!

Someone in the tribunes, so close to me, started to speak about Melvins
In particular, he spoke about Houdini and Lysol.

So I figured it out that it was a Nirvana show, but that the Melvins would be the guest band. Immediately I thought we were in the middle of the In Utero Tour, when Melvins opened several shows for Nirvana in Europe.

Lysol (1992) is one of the most accesible Melvins' albums.
Sacrifice indeed is a Flipper cover.

Now My Mind Must Go On Holiday

Six years ago, I was about to have my first published paper as a first author.

Even though I was so enthusiastic for what it meant for me, if I think about it, I really did not enjoy my life at all.

I was so stressed and focused on my research project, working for a minimum of ten hours, almost on a daily basis, that I got drunk on weekends to deal with stress.

I smoked tobacco and ate unhealthy food
The only physical activity I practiced was to play soccer on Saturdays.

I demanded too much from my heart.

At the lab, I attended to seminars each Monday.
They were divided in two categories.
On the morning, we had a Journal Club.
The second was meant to be a progress seminar and it started at lunch time and ended almost at 9:00 p.m.

At that time, they were several lazy and irresponsible students in the lab.
Frequently, they did not appear on Mondays and they did not perform experiments. They pissed off my advisor and the seminars became a nightmare.

No matter what, these seminars were never suspended -except for a couple weeks on summer and Christmas holidays.

Outside the lab, I attended to seminars each Wednesday.

They were organized on a Clinical of Addictive Disorders and they were basically for physicians, psychologists and therapists.
These seminars were taught in the same way students teach a class, when they have to expose: thousands of slides with statements that everybody could read.

They were mainly a waste of time.

I was also an asignature professor at the School of Psychology, four to six hours per week.

As a PhD student, I attended to a class which I really thought it was a waste of time.
Also, I performed experiments, sleep recordings, stereotaxic surgeries, statistical analyses and things like that.

Six years ago, Mark Lanegan came to Mexico City.
He and his band were touring Blues Funeral and they gave a show on April 9th, 2012.

Though I knew a little bit Mark Lanegan's solo career, I would have loved to go to his show.

I had heard several albums of Screaming Trees.
I believe that I just had bought Blues Funeral
I missed his show.

I was so focused on my research project, that I heard about Mark Lanegan's show almost a year later, when Soundgarden came to Mexico City for the first time.

I felt so stupid.

Now, I have several papers as first author and things have changed a lot.

A few days earlier, it was accepted my first paper as corresponding author.

Through the revision process, referees made appropriate comments that improved the quality of the manuscript.

Referees did not criticize the English, not even suggested to change a single word.

Simultaneously, it is so satisfying and frustrating.

To be a corresponding author means a lot on my field.
To be Spanish-native and to be able to write by yourself your first corresponding author paper in English should mean a lot, too.

Even though it is supposed that it is a basic skill among Spanish-native researchers (science is English-written), it is not as common as it should be.

Sadly, no one of my current colleagues knows that I have written all the papers that I have published so far as a first author.

(Blame it on my advisor.)

I don't even know if my current colleagues know that I had four papers as first author when I started to work with them.

It's pretty normal, but it's so frustrating.

I must start from scratch, as if in my previous papers, I could barely write in English.
This is so damn irritating.

(Well, in a way, this blog supports my point).

Now, I enjoy my life more than I did six years ago.

Anna Hanks from Austin, Texas, USA (16 March 2011, 14:35)
I have a lot of free time.

I employ it for writing personal stuff.
I even finished a novel with which I participated on Premio Mauricio Achar 2018.

I employ it for reading several pieces of information, literature and music.
I write about these things on my blogs.

I employ my free time for playing electric guitar.
I have three guitars -a Squier Stratocaster, a Gibson SG and another cheaper one-, and I also bought a couple of amplifiers, microphones and several guitar pedals.

I play songs I like -I never learn a song just because- and I even have composed some silly songs. I don't know if someday I will have the opportunity to record them.

I employ my free time for listening music.
That's how I discovered several artists I hadn't heard, like Kurt Vile, Courtney Barnett, Cloud Nothings...

(I have a small fortune on books, CDs, cassettes and vinyls.
I could have bought a car, instead of having these small treasures).

Nowadays, I barely drink alcohol or eat unhealthy food.

I quit smoking three years ago, I had surgery two years ago...

And Mark Lanegan came back to give a show.

Unlike six years ago, I know a lot more his solo career.

Among several of his songs and collaborations, I have heard The Winding Sheet, Bubblegum, Blues Funeral and Gargoyle...

After the show, I even shook hands with him and I got he signed me a copy of Uncle Anesthesia.

This time he was accompanied by Shelley Brien on keyboards and Jeff Fielder on guitar. They were touring Gargoyle, his tenth LP and fourth in five years.

(It was an awesome show.
Eventually, when I feel less darker and negative, I will post about it.)

No matter what, sometimes I still feel invisible, like I did six years ago.

Restless Soul, Enjoy Your Youth

A friend of mine told me about the most recent album of Pearl Jam.

It was the summer 0f 1995, or so, and the album had just came out six months ago.
He had bought Vitalogy at El Chopo, the most underground market of music at Ciudad de México -you could find out punks and the most unaccessible music, there-, and one day he lent it to me.

I really loved the music and the fact that it was a pretty recent album.

All I had heard then was old. Nirvana was my favourite band of all times, but since Kurt Cobain's death it had elapsed one year and the last studio album of the band would be Unplugged In New York

It was sad to realize that Nirvana would never play again.

I had heard Ten and I kinda thought Pearl Jam was the opposite to Nirvana, that they did not have the same anti-commercial attitude of Nirvana, even though they'd just had sued Ticketmaster.

Pearl Jam wanted to be fair with their fans and they hated that Ticketmaster elevated the cost of the tickets for their shows and the fact that the company was the only one able to sell the tickets.

I had read alot of interviews in which Kurt Cobain expressed his animadversion to Eddie Vedder. He said Vedder was a fake guy and he hated that Vedder pretended to be a nice guy with a high social consciousness, but I think it was more related to the fact that Kurt Cobain saw a bad reflection of himself in Eddie Vedder.

I was really touched by the album, when I met a girl named Nancy.
She was younger than me and she looked really beautiful and happy.
She was blonde and overweight.

Except for her overweight, she looked like a girl I felt in love with when I was in elementary school.
Veronica was from Aguascalientes and she was a tiny girl and the blondiest girl I ever met.
Veronica left elementary school so soon -her family went back to Aguascalientes- and I couldn't get close to her.

Nancy had a sister and they used to wear the same clothes.
It was pretty funny 'cause one day Nancy wore the clothes that her sister wore the day before, and so on.

I spoke to her once and asked her if we could meet. She did not understand why, but was nice and agreed. I realized she had green eyes, just like Veronica, and I felt so happy.
Obviously I wanted to make her my girlfriend.

We spoke several times, but soon it became pretty evident that I was not attractive to her.
I don't even remember in what she was interested on, nor what we talked about.
I just remember that I gave her away a cassette with my favourite songs and that she started to hang out with and older guy who was some sort of dealer in the school.

We has so old, that he was a bearded guy. I always suspected he was "un porro" -a term we use in México to refer to the guys that the autorithies of the schools buy to get rid of troubles with the real students-, but I have to accept that he was also a pretty good looking guy and that alot of girls were crazy about him.

Sometimes he played football or basketball, but he sucked.
He was very clumsy.

One day, I was having a good time with Nancy and he suddenly appeared and stared at me with a very hostile look.

Later that day, I was in the high school gym watching a basketball game.
It supposed to be an important game, between the school team and its worst enemy, or something like that, and this guy was sort of controlling the crowd -as I mentioned, he was kind of an employee of the school authorities- and someone in the crowd pushed me and I fell  on the floor of the court, just a millimeters away from him.

He was sitting but got up immediately and looked at me with his characteristic hostile look.
Dunno why I felt so strong and angst -maybe 'cause he was dating Nancy- and I stared at him with a very hostile look, to.

He approached me, walking like the rough guys of Michael Jackson's Bad music video, and I just told him:

Are you sure, you want to have troubles?

Dunno where that sentence came from.
Obviously I was not looking for a fight.

My words surprised him and he pretended that one of his friends calmed him and he went back to his place in the high school gym.

While doing it, he persisted in staring at me with his hostile look.

I felt stupid and contagious, and, since we were a teenage crowd in a high school gym, I thought it had just been pretty similar to the Smells Like Teen Spirit video of Nirvana.

It was so cool and dumb, but funny.

Every time I hear Vitalogy -and particularly, Not For You-, I almost smell the parfum of Nancy's blonde hair and wonder why would she think about me right now.

Would she still believe that I am not enough for her?

Let Me Dirty Up Your Mind

In 1996, I was 16 years old. Most of the time, I watched MTV

All I did was to listen music, but hadn't enough money to buy many records -I was so lazy and never considered to get a job- and also I was so frustrated 'cause I would never have the opportunity to hear Nirvana in a live show.

Supposedly, they had played in Tijuana back in 1989, or so, long before Nevermind overthrew Dangerous' King of Pop. It was the closer they ever played to Mexico City, and I'm pretty sure that I still cared about Thundercats then.

At some point, in almost all MTV shows, people started to talk about a band in which Butch Vig was the drummer. I was so curious to listen to this band they talked about. Would they sound like Nirvana or Nevermind? Would I like their music?

It was a sunny afternoon in the middle of  autumn, when I finally heard Garbage

As usual, after another day in school, I sat on the living room and turned on the TV.

The guy on MTV said he was about to show for the first time Queer, another single of the debut album of Garbage.

He also said that Garbage's Stupid Girl and Only Happy When It Rains videos' were on a regular rotation on MTV and that people just loved them.

via GIPHY

I felt hypnotized. It was a cryptic video, but I loved it. The music didn't sound like Nevermind at all, but I liked it, too -even though I wasn't, and I'm not, really a guy of loops and sfx

Nevertheless, I felt more attracted to the singer. She was beautiful, irreverent and provocative. Also, her voice was so sweet and soft. She sounded like a real singer, nothing to do with Courtney Love, which was almost the only female I used to listen up to.

Monday night was my first Garbage experience -they played with Blondie and it was the last show of the Rage And Rapture Tour- and I just bought a couple of tickets a week ago.

For a long time, I hadn't listened to the band. So I bought Strange Little Birds -and I loved Empty, Blackout and Even If Our Love Is Doomed- and in a few days I listened all the Garbage records' I own.

Listening to their debut album, made me feel nostalgic. Didn't remember that once I met girl that used to be a Shirley copycat.

While Shirley Manson sang and Butch Vig played the drums and both Duke Erikson and Steve Marker played guitars and Eric Avery -from Jane's Addiction!- played bass guitar, I wondered why in the hell I hadn't been in a Garbage live show. I know they've played in Mexico City constantly. Shirley said so.

Even though they didn't played Queer, I loved the show.

I'm becoming a big fan of their music, even though I still like garage punk bands.
I'm sure at some point I'm going to read their book.

Hang My Head, Drown My Fear Till You All Just Disappear

Almost four years ago I went to a Soundgarden show. It was the first time the band came to Mexico City. They just had released King Animal and they were touring the album. Even though I didn't like it at all, I wouldn't miss the opportunity to hear one of my favorite bands playing live music in my country.

via GIPHY

I bought a couple of tickets as soon as I could. Besides Nirvana, Soundgarden was the band I heard the most when I was a teenager. I particularly didn't like that they sounded more like a heavy metal band than a garage punk band -as it is the case of Ultramega OK and Badmotorfinger-, but eventually, I loved them.

The first Soundgarden's song I heard was Black Hole Sun and it blew up my mind, immediately. It must have been in the middle of the summer in 1994, shortly after USA's World Cup. Cobain just had died and it was impossible to avoid thinking of him, while hearing the song. The video was awesome and violent. Then, I watched Fell On Black Days' video and I just adored it. Later, Jesus Christ Pose and so on.

In a few years, I went from Superunknown to Badmotorfinger -it was the easiest way to find their music-, just about time to hear Down On The Upside when it came out.

I was  17 years old when the band announced their break. Never thought I would hear them playing live music, but after almost 20 years since their last studio album they recorded King Animal and announced a World Tour.

It was an awesome show. I was euphoric. Felt I was a teenager, too.

Chris Cornell just died today.

Close That Cute Mouth And Kiss Me

I heard of Kurt Vile in bed. I was so sick and half dead. It was noon, in a cold Saturday and all I wanted to do was to take a nap, but I felt so tired that I couldn't do it. Had flu and pharyngotonsillitis. I couldn't even read a couple of paragraphs of anything, without sneezing. Besides, my eyes watered all the time. It was annoying and so disturbing.

Turned on my Smart TV to distract myself, and found out a video of a guy named Kurt Vile in You Tube. His band was playing a radio show for KEXP. He was singing melancholically and I felt sort of hypnotized. I was almost in an hallucinatory state, due to the illness itself.

I thought he was singing just the way I felt. The song was so hypnotic, too. Guitar and drum and percussions made up the whole melody, and above all, Kurt's voice told a story of a man needing to be alone even when surrounded by friends, or so. I loved the song, and heard it several times. It was called Wheelhouse

I became interested in his music, and soon heard B'lieve I'm Going Down. After a while, I loved the songs. I bought the album and just a few days later the band announced they will come to Mexico City. It was a happy coincidence, and of course I bought a couple of tickets for the show.

My wife rarely enjoys the music I like. She's more into pop music. Even though, she accompanies me to all the shows I want to go. She's so nice and lovely. Nevertheless, I had spoken to her about Kurt Vile and she had heard a few songs of B'lieve I'm Going Down and she had just liked them. For several months, maybe for our entire relationship, it would be the first show we would attend to in which we were both interested.

After a couple of months, the day of the show finally arrived. I was so excited. I had thought for entire nights about the show. How would it end up? Would I be disappointed? Would it be the most amazing and intimate show I ever attend to? Would Kurt Vile became my most admired multi-instrumentalist?

I had never attended to a show of this kind. Kurt Vile's music was more folk than garage, and my entire life I had attended to garage punk shows, mainly. Media said he sounded like Neil Young at times. And Kurt Vile even played the banjo in a song of B'lieve I'm Going Down and I sort of hated it. Nevertheless, I was so excited and had great expectancies of the show.

We arrived to El Plaza an hour before the show, or so.

My wife made me notice a guy who was speaking in a funny mixture of Spanish and English to another guy selling souvenirs of the show. He wanted to buy both a cap and a T-shirt of Kurt Vile's Tour in Mexico. Obviously, none of the stuff was official merchandise. The souvenir seller was Mexican for sure, and the other guy apparently was from the United States.

I didn't think much of him, 'cause it was normal to me to find out tourists in that place of the city. I just kind of thought it would be nice to attend a show from an artist of your country in another country, in your holidays. Besides, my wife started to ask me to help out the guy. He was having difficulties to communicate to the souvenir seller. Sometimes I don't like to speak English. I felt selfish, but I wasn't in the mood.

Suddenly I looked around and I sort of recognized one of the musicians of Kurt Vile's band. Thought I had seen him in the KEXP show. He was playing bass guitar in Wheelhouse. I got close to him and asked him if he was the bass player of the band. He said he was, and then I asked him if I could take a picture with him. He agreed. After that I thanked him and we shook hands.

We entered to El Plaza and my wife made me notice I just had ignored the other musicians. I felt stupid and mean. She's right all the time.

The show started with Dust Bunnies. People was connected to the band and sang along almost all the songs. Even though the band didn't play Wheelhouse, the show was awesome. Kurt Vile was left alone on stage a few times, and he was amazing. I understood why media said he was like Neil Young, when he sang and played guitar all alone. It was so intimate and almost made me cry. Stand Inside was my favorite song of the night.

Endless Lover, Butterfly

It was a rainy day and I was really bored, when I met Valentina. Her band played in an improvised bar, located a blocks away from El Estadio Azteca. The audience was preposterous, full of drunk teenagers asking for more tequila and mariachi. They were not the kind of audience interested in listening live music; they were more the kind of audience interested in getting as drunk as possible, while fooling around and looking for kisses.

The bar was awful, and it looked like a house converted into a bar. It reminded me of the kind of places that the guys in high school used to visit, when they felt small adults trapped in infantile bodies.

My brother and his band played that evening, too. Both bands were at the beginning of their careers. Nos Llamamos rehearsed every single day and I knew all of their songs, 'cause they rehearsed in the house where I lived. Sometimes I hated them 'cause I couldn't even read or study, or even take a nap in the middle of the day.

I loved their music -they sounded like Sonic Youth-, but they were too noisy and I couldn't focus on anything else when they rehearsed. I was at home the most of the time, and I couldn't avoid their rehearsals. I was a recent graduated student, and I was sick of the research I had performed for getting my bachelor's degree. I was also exhausted of a long relationship that I'd had for almost five years. I was purifying myself from sick love and a destructive relationship. I hated myself and I wanted to change my life, but indeed I just wasted my time.

Candy's music was something between pop and punk. They didn't sound too different from Joy Division. Not only bass lines sounded at the core of every song, but the bassist was amazing. Valentina attracted me immediately. I fell in love with her when I saw her playing her Fender Precision Bass. I felt dumb, and I started to imagine stories in which we were a couple, staring at each other completely stoned, or traveling together around the city, and so on. I also started to imagine the things she liked and the way she lived every single day.

I just woke up from a weird dream. I was inside a Van with Nos Llamamos and Candy. I couldn't stop watching Valentina. Her face was full of beautiful and small freckles and her lips were bigger than I remember. They seemed to scream "Kiss me, kiss me!", but she looked a little bit uncomfortable and tried to avoid eye contact with me.

We arrived to a small bar, and there I told her that I wanted to take her a picture with me, and, out of nowhere, she said that she just had read my blog and that she didn' t know all the bands that I had written about on it. It seemed to me, that we already knew each other.

She took a deep breath and continued: "Oh, I would do the same, if I had a blog...", and I didn't understand what was the point.

She agreed to be photographed by me, but asked me to do it soon, 'cause her band had to leave the bar earlier than expected.

When she said all of these words, she was kinda frightened and nervous. Then, she walked away to play with her band, and, Aarón, the guitarist of Nos Llamamos started to make jokes about my romantic interest in Valentina, suggesting that I was so crazy about her that I would do anything for her. I told him it was a stupid thought, 'cause it looked like Valentina was indeed more interested in me than vice versa.

It was a dream, obviously, and I felt more confident than I really do.

At the end of the dream, Valentina was in front of me in a small table. We were in some kind of coffee shop. She had just said good bye to the guys of her band, and seemed really interested in talking with me. She still looked somehow frightened and nervous. I was just wondering why the hell she had read my blog, and I was considering that maybe she just wanted to complaint about it.

Maybe once I had written something awful about her band, and I didn't remember at all.

As we started to speak, I was very cold. I wanted to move to another table, 'cause we were on a terrace and the wind was blowing heavily. Then, she looked at me and told me that her band was looking for a guitarist and that she knew that I played guitar, too. Before I asked her if she was inviting me to make an audition for her band, I watched her blue eyes and her lips and I wanted to kiss her.

Then, I woke up. I was really very cold, and  I hated to have an organic dream.

What if, actually, she really read my blog?

I See You Shaking In The Light, Reading The Headline News

On December 4th, it was 6 months after my surgery. It has been a very low recovery. I've been nauseating and weak most of the time. Sometimes, I'm just tired of eating the same food everyday and avoiding anything else I like.

Physicians have told me to be patient. And warned me to not drink alcohol -or to do any other drug- in excess, ever again. Supposedly, I also have a weird heart condition and I can't smoke anymore. It's easy for them, to ask me things like that. But I cannot even drink a cup of coffee, neither eat a cheesecake nor bacon, without becoming ill.

I don't believe in God, so praying is not an option to ignore my  disease. I still don't have kids, so becoming a daddy it's not an option for getting better. I just like things that put me sad, like literature and music. I used to enjoy to be alone, but now it's sort of a hell. I try to do all the things I like, and that I'm able to do, as much as possible, but sometimes it is frustrating to feel nauseating in the middle of a reading or while I am listening music.

I love to hear live music. Sometimes I still feel ill in the middle of a show, too. And it sucks. Sometimes, when I write, I'm so sick that I cannot stop writing about anything but illnesses. When I read, I try to not focus on melancholy. But it's impossible.

Anyway, on Sunday 4th, I went to a show. Lee Ranaldo was about to play with another musicians in Mexico City. They formed a band to play live music for Georges Méliès' short films. Sonic Youth is one of my favorite bands, so I couldn't miss the opportunity to hear Lee Ranaldo's live music, again.

Before the show, in the mezzanine of the Auditorio Blackberry, I bought Acoustic Dust and The Rising Tide and when I did it, a guy told me that Lee would signed up some albums shortly after the show. I didn't think of it a lot, but as I was just right in front of Lee when he played, I was determined to make him to signed up one of the albums I bought.

When the show finished, I was so nervous. Lee is one of my favorite musicians, and I couldn't believe it would be possible to get close to him in order to get his autograph. I really love his music and his lyrics, and I can't say anymore.

In a few minutes, the mezzanine was full of guys looking for a photo with Lee and I thought that I couldn't even get closer to him. It was a little bit chaotic, and I had to get rid of some guys.

I realized Lee was asking their names to the fans, so I got even more nervous. When I arrived close to him, I was shaking. So, to avoid a confusion, I told him "I'm Marcel, like Proust..." and he smiled and told me "Like Duchamp, too"

My wife took the photographs, and Lee was a very nice guy. I still can't believe it.

And You Wanted To Dance, So I Asked You To Dance

It was a cold sunday evening, when I attended for the first time to an Eagles Of Death Metal show. Someone gave me a couple of free tickets for the festival in which they would play that evening. It happened in Mexico City, in a festival called Corona Capital.

When I heard the studio albums of the band, long before the show, I did not like them at all. I knew Josh Home was somewhat involved in the band, so I thought this band was similar to Queens Of The Stone Age. When I realized they were a funny band, I felt disappointed.

Then, at a show in Paris, they became sadly famous because they were playing when some crazy killers started to shot innocent people. I did not understand why this funny band was in the middle of such a tragedy, but I listened to their albums again.

It was almost 7: 00 pm, when Jesse Hughes and the rest of the band came up to the stage. Ironically, I was really close to the stage. I never do that, even when one of my favorite bands plays. People was enthusiastic and intrigued because of the involvement of Eagles Of Death Metal in the terrorists attacks in France almost a year ago.  Shortly after the band appeared, a popular mexican mariachi song sounded and people started to sing it along and they became crazy.

Before a brief introductory speech, Jesse Hughes and the band started with I Only Want You, and they sounded terrific and powerful, like I never expected. They were a better band than I thought. Obviously, I felt so bigoted and dumb.

The show continued with the same intensity. The frontman was so dynamic, danced here and there, and talked to the audience all the time. At some point, he put on a jacket allusive to David Bowie. Then, the band made a cover of Moonage Daydream and people got wild. Later on, they played Duran Duran's Save A Prayer, and I fall in love with the band. Since then, I cannot stop listening this version. It's really a great cover

My point of view changed completelely. From now on, I will not judge a band from a studio album but from its live music.
